This school year, the Johnson City Middle School participated in a whole school book reading opportunity. Following the model of One School, One Book, the entire middle school staff and student body read "The Season of Styx Malone" by author Kekla Magoon. This award-winning novel tells the story of three young boys, brothers Caleb and Bobby Gene and their friend Styx Malone, a cool newcomer in their small town. Each student and staff member received their own copy of the book. Students engaged in book discussions, trivia, and even had the opportunity to listen to staff-recorded videos of the book.
On October 26, the entire middle school held a virtual assembly with the author. She talked about the wide-ranging inspirations for her books, the demands and discipline required to be an author, the common theme of a character wanting to make a difference in her stories and, of course, “The Season of Styx Malone.”
We would like to thank all our volunteer book readers including JC Trustee Martin Maney, radio DJ Louie G, JC firefighter Brandon Toro-Segarra, JC Police Officer Kate Furman, Superintendent Eric Race, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning & Accountability Joeseph Guccia, Assistant Superintendent for Administration Elisa Eaton, Director of Student Services Paula Grassi and Athletics Director Jeffrey Paske.
