Seniors meet virtually with free speech activist

TinkerOn Tuesday afternoon, our senior class had the opportunity to speak virtually with Mary Beth Tinker, an American free speech activist known for her role in the 1969 Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District Supreme Court case. Tinker v. Des Moines is one of the most consequential free speech cases in American history. In particular, this landmark decision by the Supreme Court defined First Amendment rights of students in U.S. public schools. The Tinker test, also known as the "substantial disruption" test, is still used by courts today to determine whether a school's interest in preventing disruption infringes upon students' First Amendment rights.

Ms. Tinker travels and speaks to groups of students and educators about her story. In her presentation, she shares the story behind this monumental decision by the Supreme Court and offers the students an opportunity to ask questions.
