Reality Check members share anti-smoking message with elementary-middle school students

On May 29, Johnson City High School Reality Check students Emma Gage, Gabriella Roerk, Trischell Goodwin, and Coordinator Rebecca Gelunas from the Broome County Health Department visited the elementary-middle school to present to our 5th- and 6th-graders on the dangers of tobacco. For the presentation, the younger students divided into teams and answered true/false and multiple-choice questions about the effects of smoking. The classes also learned about the heightened addictive risks of e-cigarettes and how they can negatively impact the lungs, heart, and stomach.
Reality Check is a youth-led movement in New York State that empowers young people to become community leaders. Supported by adults, the initiative exposes the manipulative and deceptive marketing tactics of the tobacco industry.
Student members of our high school’s Reality Check will conduct presentations for additional 5th- and 6th-grade classes through June 3.
