Amanda Barber and Robert Castelo from the New York State Department of Transportation visited one of our high school science classes this morning to discuss their research and efforts to make New York roadways safer from wildlife-related accidents. They explained how NY has developed terrestrial connectivity infrastructure in some areas to help reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions. Examples include culverts and bridges with platforms installed for wildlife to cross safely beneath roads, as well as exclusion fencing and walls to serve as barriers. A key benefit of their infrastructure projects is enhancing wildlife movement, which also improves motorist safety.
