On June 24, Ramy Abdel Navi from Playlab visited the high school to meet with the district’s AI team, consisting of District Superintendent Eric Race, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning and Accountability Joseph Guccia, Director of Information Services Cliff Butler, Technology Integration Coach Chris James, and educators from each building, to discuss integrating AI into education.
Playlab is a nonprofit organization devoted to creating a future where educators have the agency not just to use AI but to shape it.
Mr. Navi discussed how AI works, how to gain confidence in what to build with AI, and how to use it.
“I was nervous to say the least,” said 6th-grade teacher Nate Luce. “I'm not a tech guy and would rather plan and build a science investigation with my hands than do anything on my Chromebook. But after a few minutes of learning to navigate Playlab, I was able to create a project-based learning activity for my students for my Earth and Space Unit, which I will teach in September.”
Chris James was also impressed. “As part of the AI Committee meeting, we discussed approaches to artificial intelligence in education with both curiosity and responsibility. We explored how AI can be applied to support both staff and students, discussed considerations around privacy and AI literacy, and emphasized the need for human judgment in any AI-supported work.”
The district’s AI Committee is looking forward to developing further guidance to support safe, ethical, and informed use throughout the district.
