campusStatement regarding the temporary closure of the elementary-middle school

At approximately 5:17 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, the Johnson City Fire Department responded to a fire alarm activation at the Johnson City Elementary-Middle School.

Upon their arrival, firefighters made entry into the building and found that smoke detectors had been activated in multiple locations.

Fire crews and officers of the Johnson City Police Department began to check throughout the building, and an active fire was discovered within a second-floor classroom. Firefighters immediately brought the main body of fire under control, however, personnel remained on-scene for another two hours ensuring that it had not spread beyond the room of origin.

The school was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries to responding personnel were reported.

Fire damage was confined to the classroom, however, an odor of smoke was noticeable in the adjacent hallways, prompting school officials to cancel classes for Monday.

The investigation into the cause of the fire was conducted by the Johnson City Fire Marshal's office, which has concluded to have been electrical in nature. No further details are available at this time.

We thank the Johnson City Fire Department and Johnson City Police Department for their swift response.
