At the Senior Scholarship Dinner on June 2, senior Emma McCaffery was the recipient of the Kenzee Jean Wheeler Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,200.
The scholarship was created in memory of Kenzee Jean Wheeler, a four-year-old girl whose life was tragically cut short in a motor vehicle accident due to a caregiver not securing her in a child car seat.
Since 2012, the memorial scholarship has honored Kenzee with the goal of raising awareness of the safety of children in motor vehicles.
Each year, scholarship applicants submit a creative project, such as, but not limited to, a poem, song, poster, painting or video. To help raise awareness, Emma created posters and wristbands and distributed them throughout the community, including the Family Enrichment Center, the YMCA, and Helping Celebrate Abilities (HCA) in Johnson City.
On June 4, scholarship founder and grandmother of Kenzee, Iva Jean Tennant, visited the elementary school to donate two child car seats in honor of Emma's awareness efforts.
