High school students in Caitlyn Bigney’s Data Science class recently collaborated with students in Ontario, Canada, via a pen-pal mailing for a data visualization project called “Data Tells a Story.” Each student created a colorful postcard that reflected their own experiences using self-generated data. Through this activity, the students learned about the data science process and began using data to tell stories. Students made sense of the questions: What part of the story is told by data? What is variation? How is data generated? What data is gathered about themselves? Through the project, they were introduced to many different ways to represent data. From the data visualizations, they considered what story they could tell from their data.
