JC Police and JCHS Street Law class collaborate for "Ride Along Street Law" program
Johnson City High School began a new program today that is aimed at providing students with a unique learning opportunity outside the classroom.
The high school, in collaboration with the Johnson City Police Department, has launched the "Ride Along Street Law" program in Mrs. Carpenter's Street Law class.
The idea was introduced by JCHS School Resource Officer Cioci, who reached out to the JC Police Department’s Community Engagement Officer, Officer Peets, as a way to build positive connections with law enforcement and to provide students enrolled in the Street Law class with a firsthand look at modern policing and the role officers play in the community.
The school board and JC Police Chief Dodge approved the endeavor to foster unique educational experiences and community engagement.
Students interested in participating in an individual ride-along with Officer Peets are selected by Officer Cioci and must meet with parental approval. In addition, students are specifically selected for future ride-alongs who are interested in a possible career in law enforcement, criminal justice, or public service.
Today, sophomore Za'raya Camacho met with Officer Peets outside the high school's main entrance and rode in a JC Police vehicle, toured the police station, met Chief Dodge, walked the beat on Main Street, and followed calls and observed safely from inside the vehicle.
We thank Chief Dodge, Officer Peets, and Officer Cioci for this collaboration and look forward to continuing this positive endeavor with our high school students.
