Students in Civic Engagement share project presentations with classmates, invited guests

High school students in Judy Gleason and Donna Geetter’s “Citizens in Action” elective class have been researching community issues of interest and sharing their findings through PowerPoint presentations with their classmates, invited staff members, and community guests. Topics have included improving academic success in AP classes, ways to combat substance abuse relapse and crime rates in Broome County, and methods to help prevent drug-induced homelessness.
Today, Johnson City Mayor Christina Charuk and several high school staff members visited the class to hear presentations on ways to improve Johnson City’s appearance and factors that contribute to students’ academic success at Johnson City High School.
Based on in-class feedback, the students will further improve their projects in preparation for the high school’s third annual Civics Fair, which will be held on May 20 in the high school cafeteria.
