Former Johnson City Superintendent Mary Kay Roland was invited this week as a special guest to speak to the 6th-grade classes about the 2011 flood and its devastating impact on JC, the surrounding communities, and school districts along the Susquehanna River. Her presentation connected to the 6th-grade classes' current studies on increasingly severe weather patterns.
Mrs. Roland shared numerous photos and weather maps from the flood and noted that Johnson City High School was designated as a shelter for hundreds of displaced families. She also mentioned the district's challenges feeding people, caring for family pets, and providing clothing for families who lost their homes.
Additionally, she discussed the challenges of delaying the start of the 2011-12 school year due to displaced families and how bus routes were adjusted to ensure all students could be safely picked up and transported to and from school.
