Applications for substitute teachers in all subject areas are accepted by the district throughout the year. Daily substitutes are not advertised for and are on an on-call basis. Call arrangements are made through the Teacher Registry services provided by Broome-Tioga BOCES.

Please be aware that there is no guarantee that you will be called for any specific number of days, or on a regular basis, or at all.

Prerequisites:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
  • Background clearance through New York State Education Department (fee paid by applicant).
  • All district staff must be fingerprinted and clearance received from the NYSED prior to being hired.

1
Fill out Instructional Application, and addendum if needed. It is not necessary to complete a statement of philosophy for substituting, unless you are submitting the application for a permanent position as well.
2
You must then bring, in person, your completed application to the JCCSD instructional personnel office.

a) At that time, you will be given a substitute packet and additional hiring instructions and required materials (see below).

b) Our offices are located in the Johnson City High School building; come in through the High School main entrance and sign in, then receive directions to Room 166.

c) Applications are accepted between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 12 noon, and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on most business days and throughout the summer.

d) You may call to set up an appointment (of about 15 minutes) to submit your application and review the substitute application process - (607) 763-1228.

You will be asked to provide the following documentation prior to being placed on our substitute list:
a) Official college transcript(s), which reflects degree conferral. This may be brought in by you in a SEALED envelope from the college, or sent directly from the college to our office. It is sufficient to supply this for either your Bachelor's or Master's degree.
b) 1 letter of reference with original signature and 2 references with phone numbers.
c) Copy of your teaching certificate(s), if you are certified.
d) We will check for your fingerprint clearance, or provide you with a packet and instructions for obtaining. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE FINGERPRINT CLEARANCE, please bring documentation for items 4)a, below, and be prepared to fill out tax forms.
4
Once we have your application, transcript(s), credentials/letters, certificate(s) if supplying, and fingerprint clearance, you will be called for another appointment to complete these items:
a) Homeland Security form (I-9) for which you will need to bring acceptable unexpired documentation (no copies) (see page 5 here for list).
b) Federal and State tax forms.
c) Miscellaneous district paperwork as required.
