Richard received six varsity letters during his time at JCHS.  He excelled on both the football field and the basketball court.  Richard was the heart and soul of the 1975 and the 1976 JC football teams.  His skills as a halfback and a linebacker helped the team to an 8-1 record in ’75…at the time, this was Johnson City’s first divisional title in 15 years.  Richard was named to the All-STAC team at halfback that year, and he went on to make the All-STAC team again in the 1976 season, but this time on defense as a linebacker.  Richard was both the team captain and the team MVP for both his junior and senior seasons.  He gained over 1500 all purpose yards in these two seasons, and his efforts earned him recognition as an honorable mention on the All-State football team both years.  On the basketball court, Richard was a guard who accumulated over 175 steals and 200 assists in his three years on the varsity team.  He was the team captain and team MVP in both 1976 and 1977.  In addition to this recognition on his team, Richard was named to the all-STAC team and he was honorable mention on the all-state team in both of these seasons.  After his outstanding years at JCHS, Richard continued his athletic career as a defensive back at C.W. Post University on Long Island.  For his many athletic accomplishments, the JC Athletic Hall of Fame is proud to welcome Mr. Richard Balles.
