Mr. Yonkoski excelled in three sports during his career in Johnson City, earning 10 varsity letters during this time—5 in wrestling, 3 in football, and 2 in baseball.  Matt’s leadership and ability helped his teams to STAC, Sectional, and state championships.  He was the captain of the baseball team in 2001…the captain of the football team in 1999 and 2000, and the captain of the wrestling team in 2000 and 2001.  Matt played on the 1998 Section 4 championship football team and the 1999 divisional championship team.  He piled up 2500 yards and 23 touchdowns in his three year varsity career as a Quarterback and running back…he ended his football career by playing in the Ernie Davis exceptional Senior Classic.  Matt’s greatest athletic accomplishments came on the wrestling mat.  He joined the varsity as an 8th grader in 1997 and would go on to win 141 matches in his career.  His teams won a state title in 1999 and STAC and section 4 titles in all five years from 1997-2001.  Individually, he was a 3 time STAC champion, a 3 time Section 4 champion and a 2 time Class A champion.  Matt capped his wrestling career with an unforgettable senior season.  He went undefeated…a perfect 40-0 record in winning the NYS championship at 145 lbs. and earning an honorable mention distinction as a USA Wrestling All-American.  Matt would go on to wrestle at James Madison University.  Mr. Yonkoski recently returned to Johnson City as a coach.  He has served as an assistant wrestling coach for the last two years and as an assistant baseball coach for the 2007 season.  For his accomplishments on the football and baseball fields, on the wrestling mat, and as a Wildcat who has returned to give back to his school, the JC Athletic Hall of Fame is proud to welcome Mr. Matthew Yonkoski.
