Mary Shoemaker Riley, JCHS class of 1985, becomes the third superb female athlete to be welcomed to the JC Athletic Hall of Fame.  Although the highlight of Mary’s athletic career came in winning the 1985 Girls Basketball State Championship, her overall athletic achievements extend beyond that one incredible season.  The former Ms. Shoemaker earned an impressive 12 varsity letters as a student-athlete…4 in basketball, 3 in track, 3 in softball, and one each in soccer and swimming.  She was a league all star in track in 1984 and an all star in swimming in 1982.  In fact, during her one varsity season on the swim team, Mary set the school record in the 50m freestyle and was part of a school record setting 100 meter relay team.  The basketball court is where Mary truly excelled.  She was a league all star in both 1984 and 1985 and she was the team MVP of the state tournament in 1985.  Known for her tough defense and her ability to run the offense from the point guard position, Mary was truly the catalyst behind Johnson City’s only state championship basketball team.  Here are a few of Mary’s scoring lines from the 1985 state tournament:

1st intersectional game vs. Ogdensburg HS—16 points, 9 rebounds, 9 steals, and 7 assists.

2nd intersectional game vs. Nottingham HS of Syracuse—12 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists

And in the State Title Game—14 points, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds.

Mary’s humble leadership on the court was a major factor in the team’s success, and the many great memories from the 1985 season exist because of her performance.

Because of her athletic accomplishments in several sports and her outstanding contributions to the 1985 NYS Championship girls basketball team, the Johnson City Athletic Hall of Fame is proud to welcome Mary Shoemaker Riley, JCHS class of 1985.
