Performance at the
Preakness Celebration 2005
Preakness Celebration has become a tradition for people of all ages since its inception in 1988. The week-long series of special events celebrates the annual running of the Preakness Stakes, Baltimore's "Super Bowl" and the 2nd jewel in thoroughbred racing's prestigious Triple Crown. The Westside Preakness Parade is a part of Preakness Celebration 2005, a series of events preparing Baltimore for the 130th annual running of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 21. This parade is presented by Martin O'Malley and produced by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and Preakness Celebration, Inc. The parade is sponsored by Westside Renaissance.
The parade kicks off with the Baltimore City Mounted Police and Giddy Up, Preakness Celebration's adored mascot. Giant helium balloons make this sky-high parade a one of a kind Baltimore event.
In the spirit of Preakness, several units featuring gallant horses participate, including the Maryland League of Horseman. The Fire Museum, Sokol Gymnastics Team, Downtown Partnership, Enoch Pratt Library Bookmobile, Red Devil Art Car, and the Baltimore Ravens mascot add even more charm to this Charm City staple.
School bands from Edmondson Westside High School, Johnson City Marching Band from New York, and DeSoto Central High School from Mississippi join in the celebration, as well as community bands. Miss Preakness, The Flower Mart, Ms. Senior Maryland, cheerleaders, color guards, drill teams and more complete the procession.
