Wrestling

When a student athlete receives six varsity letters in the same sport, it is an indication of a special talent, and Matt Sorochinsky, JCHS Class of 1991, possessed such a talent.  During his time at JCHS, Matt distinguished himself as one of the top wrestlers in the storied history of Wildcat wrestling program.

Matt’s career began in 7th grade in the 91 pound weight class.  He was part of back-to-back state championship wrestling teams during his 8th grade and freshman years in 1987 and ’88.  It was in his 8th grade year of 1987 that Matt began a string of five consecutive individual STAC titles.  He was the first STAC  wrestler to ever accomplish such a feat at the time.  Over the course of his high school career, Matt was a four-time Section IV finalist and a three-time Class A champion.  He capped his outstanding career with an unforgettable senior season.  Undefeated in his 36 matches, Matt captured the STAC, Class A, Section IV, and New York State individual titles in 1991.  When it was all said and done, Matt won 168 matches during his career…good for 6th place in the New York State record books at the time.

Ithaca College was the site of Matt’s college wrestling career.  He wrestled for the Bombers for four years, and in that time he was All-State four times, a three-time conference champion, and a two-time NCAA All-American (1993 & ’94).  Matt finished 3rd at the NCAA Championships in 1993 and 2nd in 1994.  He was an integral part of the 1994 Ithaca team that went on to win the NCAA Wrestling Championship.  His 106 college wins rank him 6th all-time on Ithaca College’s career list.  Matt earned the honor of being inducted into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.

Although wrestling is where Matt got most of his attention, he also was an accomplished track athlete during his time at JCHS, earning three varsity letters from 1989-1991.  After win the 145lb state wrestling championship in March of ’91, Matt went on to be a Class B and Section IV place winner in the pole vault clearing 13’9”.  His efforts earned him an All-STAC honor in his senior season.

Although his days as a competitive wrestler are over, Matt remains active in the wrestling community.  He has officiated high school and college matches since 1993, and he currently officiates matches for Division I wrestling in the biggest conferences in the country.

The Johnson City Athletic Hall of Fame is proud to welcome wrestler and pole vaulter Matt Sorochinsky, JCHS Class of 1991.
